Conversations: Building Resilience: How Women Leaders Shine Through Mental Wellness

The event began with welcoming remarks from Minlin Kao, Head of the Department of Tourism at the Kaohsiung City Government, who introduced us to the vibrant and inclusive city of Kaohsiung. This was followed by Nelson Wen, Public Affairs Officer at AIT Kaohsiung branch, who highlighted the unique challenges women face and underscored the importance of support networks and allyship, perfectly setting the tone for our panel conversation.

Patricia MacLeod, Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Industry Partnerships at ASE, shared her experience of managing stress as a working mom of two. Patricia emphasized the crucial role organizations play in offering flexibility for work-life balance, and how leaders can embrace vulnerability as a strength to build resilient teams.

Jill Liu, Deputy Director of Research and Development at TSMC, shed light on managing resilience within teams. She discussed the importance of thoughtful leadership in facilitating balanced workloads to mitigate stress. As well as her personal experience in caring for family elders and realizing the need for self care and building a strong support network. Reminding us that resilience is not a solo effort but a collective one.

Doctor Elric Tsai, Director, Department of Preventive Medicine from Chi Mei Medical Center, provided a medical perspective on effectively managing and measuring stress. Dr. Tsai highlighted resilience as the capacity to positively navigate stress and emphasized the role of daily habits, such as healthy eating and exercise, in regulating our minds and bodies.

Kei Chen, Founder and CEO of Crossover, shared her personal journey of prioritizing mental health. She spoke candidly about how she overcame unhealthy coping mechanisms in her hectic career and shifted towards a healthier lifestyle centered on running and exercise.

A special thanks to Kaohsiung City Economic Development Bureau and ALIEN Art for bringing the CAREhER x ASE Summer Summit to the vibrant city of Kaohsiung for the first time. And to ASE’s commitment to empowering future women leaders through open learning, guidance, and networking.

Curate: Swap, Sell & Sip

After our Summer Summit panel discussion, we had the pleasure of hearing from three inspiring founders within our community— Debbie Wu, Kate Low, and Mikey Chen—who shared the journeys behind their brands and how they advocate for sustainability, circular economy, and collaboration with local producers through impactful branding.

Community led Panel

Debbie Wu reflected on the evolution of the textile industry, particularly the rise of fast fashion and its effect on her family’s business. This experience prompted her to rethink how fashion can be consumed more sustainably. With MYMIKA, she’s creating a community by giving preowned items a new life and raising awareness about circular fashion.

Kate Low’s brand is deeply rooted in women’s empowerment, aiming to make every customer feel comfortable and authentic in their own skin. Her brand’s story resonates with common experiences shared by women, fostering connections and authenticity in today’s social media-driven world. Kate reminds us that “we are not alone.”

Mikey Chen’s Chajiu, blends traditional tea practices with modern perspectives to revitalize a near-extinct cultural heritage. His work supports local farmers and producers, demonstrating how collaboration can yield results greater than the sum of its parts.

Mini Marketplace

We wrapped up the workshop with a mini marketplace, where participants from around the globe engaged in a swap-and-sell experience with their pre-owned clothing, all while enjoying drinks from Chajiu. It was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our network and share in our commitment to sustainable living.

Connect: Networking Dinner

We end the day with an unforgettable networking dinner at Kaohsiung’s Yonshin Fudopia, set against a breathtaking seaside view. It was a night filled with new friendships and reunions, as 100 members of our community gathered together to reflect on the day’s activities. Nestled by the harbor, we enjoyed modern Taiwanese dishes and celebrated our shared experience with a toast.

Cruise:  Yacht Ride with a Mentor

Day 2 of the <Her Resilience> began with a refreshing one-hour cruise ride along the scenic Kaohsiung River, where over 70 women leaders came together to share, reflect, and celebrate. The session was opened by our beloved Mentor Her Mentor, Jennifer Kang, from Standard Chartered Bank, whose words set the tone for an inspiring and reflective experience. With her thoughtful sharing, the participants were encouraged to embrace their stories of resilience and growth.

With 8 mentors from Taipei, Tokyo, and Singapore onboard, the cruise quickly became a platform for meaningful exchanges. As the late summer sun sparkled on the river’s surface, we shared stories of overcoming challenges and celebrated our collective achievements throughout the year.

Cheers filled the air as we toasted to these moments with Rococo beer, a luxury Japanese brew that added a touch of elegance to our celebration. Together, we embraced the power of community, recognizing the strength we find in supporting one another through every step of our journey.

This cruise wasn’t just a beautiful experience—it was a celebration of personal wins, leadership, and the unyielding strength that comes from empowering one another. Here’s to many more years of growth and resilience together!
