EP.143 與自然共生的樹屋旅程|Belonging in Nature: Treeful Treehouse with Co-Founder Maha Kikugawa

Imagine arriving somewhere that gently reminds you you’re part of something bigger — and for Maha Kikugawa, that feeling begins in nature. As the creative force behind Treeful Treehouse in Okinawa, Maha brings a global perspective shaped by life across Japan, the US, and Europe, along with a deep belief in coexistence with the natural world. In this episode, she shares how designing with ecosystems in mind, cultivating community through shared values, and telling a story that caught the attention of CNN, National Geographic (and Vogue!) can help people slow down, feel grounded, and rediscover a deeper sense of belonging.

Maha Kikugawa

Maha Kikugawa @maha.kikugawa is a creative director, brand designer, and strategist working at the intersection of nature, luxury, and hospitality. As the co-founder and CMO/CBO of Treeful Treehouse Sustainable Resort, she shaped the brand and spatial experience from concept to global recognition—driven entirely by organic storytelling rather than paid advertising. Through Maha Inc., she collaborates with founders and operators to create brands that are vision-led, visually distinct, and globally resonant.

Summary

For Maha Kikugawa, belonging begins in nature. Growing up in Japan, later studying ecosystem science in the US, and living in Europe, she developed a global perspective — and a deep respect for natural environments. That foundation shaped her journey of creating Treeful Treehouse in Okinawa with her father, built around one core idea: coexistence with nature.

As Maha reflects on what it means to create experiences rooted in coexistence, she explores the relationships between forests, local communities, and ourselves. From designing treehouses that respect the land they stand on to building a global community through authenticity rather than advertising, she shares why today’s travelers aren’t searching for more — they’re searching for meaning. At its heart, this episode is a reminder that belonging isn’t something we build from scratch; it’s something we return to.
