我是 Tong, 我在 Kono 做 Head of Product,我在這邊大概三年多,要認識我的三個關鍵字是 #Mom #Critical thinker #Always be learning

1.請跟大家聊聊你在 KONO 的工作內容,Kono 的產品到底什麼樣的產品呢?

對大部分 user 來講我們是一個雜誌閱讀的平台,So yes we aim to offer the best digital reading experience anytime/anywhere when it comes to magazines. We are actually a lot more than a reading app. 對我們來說 user 一直是兩個客戶端,一個是 magazine reader,一個是 magazine publisher. So we are actually trying to build products or services to help build communities or grow memberships around magazines.
我覺得雜誌這個 industry, it may not seem like a sexy industry, but a lot is changing and with the changes there are a lot of opportunities as well.

2.身為 Head of Product 你平常的工作內容是什麼呢?

As head of product I’m responsible for what we build and how well what we built performs. 所以我通常是跟我們的 designers, engineers and user researchers to define, design, implement and market test the products. We call ourselves “the product team”. And as a team we also support our marketing team and content team for their goals.

3.你本身對 Kono 這個閱讀 app 產品的 vision 以及你為產品所列出的 roadmap 是什麼呢?最棒的 features 又是哪些?

我覺得 Kono 有一個很鮮明的特點是 We pride ourselves in being a very “people centric”. This reflects not only in the product we build but also in the many ways we do things and in how we grow as a company. 最近我們會有一個蠻大的改版,actually i'm pretty excited about. Just like a lot of our small and medium sized publishers we served- we put a lot of craftsmanship into the app that is based on user feedback and user research. We really practice what we preach - empathy is really important around here.
在產品這一端 we will continue to improve our users’ reading experience - we’ll continue to grow that side of the business for sure, both in Taiwan and overseas. On the other hand we are starting to explore different ways to help publishers reach their business goals or meet the challenges they face. After all they are our “users” too.

4.接下來你們會 focus 的地方是什麼?

I’d like us as a team or as a company to focus on being more efficient and more agile. I think we all understand this and we all want this in principle. But it takes practice in reality. And being distributed geographically it poses additional challenges on everyone. I think with every product release cycle we are getting better. And I know this may sound cliched but we need to practice more of “fail fast and fail often”. I’d rather us to pick fewer things and do them better, instead of work on a million things but not able to deliver 100% because of our limited resources.

5.身為 Head of product,又同樣是 PM role,請簡單描述你的工作 style ? 以及你覺得怎麼樣才是有解決問題的能力呢?

Yes product sits in the middle of everything - you’ve seen those diagrams that put PM in the intersection of users, business, user, design, engineering… I think that’s the exciting part but it’s also the challenging part. I think communication is vital.
and how to master the skill to really as a team to communicate well. i think we are still practicing. Understanding our users and meeting their needs requires the ability to listen to not only what they are saying but also to what they are not saying. Also the skill of knowing what the right questions to ask, and critical thinking. We try to use the same set of philosophy and skills when we work within the company when we need to build consensus and momentum, try to earn respect, or to motivate each other - to make the team function optimally.

我基本上每天都會跟在台灣的 team 開 product meeting, sometimes they are short scrum meetings, often times they are longer when we discuss product features.
We are getting better at how to have meetings across the pacific - sending out outlines beforehand so people are prepared before the meeting; following up what we discussed with meeting minutes. Being geographically distributed often means we have to over communicate - we make a point to follow up slack texts with zoom confirmations; and likewise we follow up zoom conversations with written documents. There are so many details in the day to day execution - it’s easy to say it in principle. But I just think it takes a lot discipline to practice.

I think to be a good problem solver requires empathy - the very foundation of design thinking or any kind of critical thinking. Being a mom has taught me over and over again to see things from my kids’ perspectives and it’s very humbling. We talk about empathy a lot at Kono - what are our users pain points? What problems are we really solving? And we use the same way of thinking when “growth hacking” our team. When we hit challenges as a team or individually - I want to put myself in other people’s shoes and see where issues come from and what we can do to help each other. We are a small startup - I don’t want the culture to be that “whatever the headquarter says we’ll do”. I want everybody to feel empowered.

6.你自己最喜歡的 app 是哪三個?為什麼?

Wechat (微信), Instagram, Medium are probably the three most time sinking apps for me. All of them are designed and executed almost flawlessly. But as a user - they serve my needs really really well and have enriched my life in many ways.

7.如果你可以跟未來同事喊話,請給大家三個精簡的建議?

I often say everything I learned about working as a product person I learned from my kids or parenting in general. So I’ll pick three quotes that I learned from my kids’ school that really helped me for my journey with Kono,

1.“Be the change you wish to see - at school, at work, in life.“
2.“The illiterate is not those who cannot read or write. It’s those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
3.“Complain with empathy, and bring along your ideas on how to improve.”
